Government shutdown looms: What Must Be Done

Calling the plan a path to peace and responsibility, he called it a path to peace and responsibility. We’re less than 26 hours away from a government shutdown, and tonight, we’ll see a rare display of bipartisan support from some California lawmakers. This isn’t just a September problem. This isn’t just a government shutdown problem. We’ve been operating on automatic pilot for the entire fiscal year. Congress last set its priorities in March 2024. It would be better if Congress passed these appropriations bills months before they’re needed. It’s absolutely true that the lack of timely appropriations bills has led us to fall into the habit of operating on automatic pilot, and we continue to have proposals that don’t rethink budget priorities.

These are Republican Congressman Kevin Kiley of Rockland and Democratic Congressman Brad Sherman of Sherman Oaks, who will speak with me at 6 p.m. Both agree that this protracted debate could and should have been avoided. They also seem to agree on the issue of expanding healthcare benefits. The Democrats have come up with their bargaining position, and that position is to provide healthcare to 20 million people who will suffer under Obamacare, whose premiums will double. If we don’t change, if we don’t change.

If Brad and some of his colleagues are saying, as they are, that in order to give this last extension, we want to negotiate on certain issues, then I think that’s fine. Negotiations can be held on healthcare and how to prevent premiums from rising. That’s important to me and many others. Now, the deadline for reaching an agreement is midnight Tuesday night. If there’s no agreement, most government agencies not related to the military or national security will have to close.

We’ve seen government shutdowns. Do they think that will happen? Both of them think it will be a short-term shutdown, which is certainly unfortunate, because it will harm many federal employees. Some will be furloughed, some will have to work without pay, and so on. So this is really detrimental to the economy and to a lot of people. Still, it’s good to see that the two agree on so many issues. And it’s also worth noting that Congressman Kiely said.
